After Dark ShenaningansA night in a foreign city is not complete without having a taste of its nightlife. All our previous attempts through the week were disastrous in places like Framingham and Waltham. However, we have now moved to a hotel right in the middle of Boston CBD, so tonight should be better.

The night started off with a trip down to Faneuil Hall. This place is renowned for its Irish pubs boasting over a dozen of these establishments with many dating to the early years of the US. We felt that this would be a good place to start off as we'll be able to get some good food as well as listen to some live music. We had really wanted to go and listen to a jazz band, but could not find any, so a pub band would have to do. We made a quick walk through around the whole area and identified some places that might be worth eating in. A bit away from Fanheuil Hall was another street which would be the Italian corner of Boston as all it had were Italian restuarants.

Our first stop was the Purple Shamrock. Unfortunately, I could not get in as the bouncer wanted to see identification and my Australian Drivers License was not acceptable. He wanted to see my passport and that is something I never carry with me at night. Next stop was Paddy O's. I had the same issue with identification. The bouncer took my license and put it into some sort of contraption that validates the id. Obviously my license would not validate in it. He asked for another id, but on informing him that I didn't have any and that we had just arrived in Boston, he let us in. The food was not that good, but the band was pretty good. We stayed here till around 10ish at which time we decided to head to a nightclub.

I had done my homework and found out that the best night clubs in Boston are all on Landowne St. I even got myself onto the guestlist at Avalon, which is said to be the biggest club in Boston. However, as a backup, I also got myself onto the list at Mantra. In the end, we decided to go to Mantra instead as it was walking distance from the hotel and would not require us to catch a taxi as in the case of Avalon. Had the same id problem at Mantra, but the door chick was easier to get past. It was a single floor club with an additional small room in the basement. The whole time there was no one in the basement. The club got pretty packed by midnight and I don't remember what sort of music was playing. There was a special event happening - Synergy. Not sure what it was about though. The drinks, though, were very expensive.... $10 for a scotch and coke.

Stayed at Mantra till closing time at 2 AM and then headed out with the crowd to the after-party at Rise Night club. Don't remember much at all about Rise or for how long I was there. Next time, I would love to check out some of the places on Lansdowne Street.
