Assembly

Now that I got all the components, its time to put them together.

The case was nicely laid out and very easy to assemble. Just followed the instructions and they are mostly correct. As such, I will just mention some of the smaller things I noticed during the installation.

The Antec manual mentions that a three pin fan signal connector with blue and black wires to available to connect the power supply to one of the motherboard fan connectors. However, I could not find this wire anywhere. The only three pin cable was for the VFD. This is a minor issue as that signal is not important for the normal functioning of the system.

The biggest problem I had was installing the hard drive. The SATA connector on the motherboard is almost right up a metal panel. What this meant is that it is not possible to insert the cable into the socket. I had to disassemble the whole lot, insert the cable into the socket and then place the motherboard into the case. This added a lot of time to the process as the hard drive was the last thing I was installing. This is also going to create problems when I want to add more SATA devices as I'll have to take the motherboard out.

Another problem with the hard drive is that the screws are on the wrong side of the hard drive. The screw holes on the metal panels do not line up with the hard drive. I got it to work by turning the hard disk around to line up on one side. The screws don't line up on the other side though. Also, this will not be possible for the second hard drive, because a metal panel comes in the way if I turn it around for the screws to insert. Again, this will cause problems when it comes to expand.

Other than that, everything went smoothly and the system starts up. It is extremely quiet. When I first started it up, I thought it didn't start. However, adding a monitor showed that it was running, memory was successfully detected as was the hard drive.

Next step is to install the software. I am planning to attempt to use MythTV. The flexibility and control of MythTV is very appealing to me. However, if it ends up being too hard, I might just give up and put Media Center on there.
