Operating System

The next thing on the list is to install an operating system. My first preference is to use MythTV, which requires a Linux based OS. After reading through a lot of the possible distributions, I decided to try Mythbuntu, which is based on Ubuntu. I have heard a lot of good things about Ubuntu and saw the video of it vs Vista on YouTube, so though this would be a good opportunity to try it out,

The other option would be to use Fedora Core as there are a lot of step-by-step instructions on how to install MythTV with Redhat. However, I think it is worth trying the packaged distribution.

I downloaded the iso from the website, burned it on a CD and put it in, hoping for a straight forward install. The install fails with the last comment being "Running local boot scripts". Checking the Ubuntu forums, it seems this is a very common problem and related to the XWindows not starting up due to the video drivers. I tried the suggestions about modifying xorg.conf file to no avail. So, first attempt is unsuccessful.

Next attempt is to try the Ubuntu 7.10 Alternate CD. The Ubuntu wiki currently does not have instructions on how to install MythTV on Gutsy. Or more accurately, they just point you to Mythbuntu. So, I followed the instructions for Feisty instead. I expect there to be minor differences in the actual installation instructions. This should atleast get the base OS installed, after which I can start trying to debug the video driver issues. Downloaded the ISO, burned the CD, verifying its content and started the install.

During the installation, the network DHCP fails if the network card is not connected to the router. I was hoping it would have allowed configuration of the Wireless card before that, so that it would have used it instead of the LAN. In any case, a small issue that does not really affect anything.

The install went smoothly till the section on setting up additional hardware. The additional hardware that I needed to install included the WLAN card, the Dvico Dual Digital 4 TV Tuner card. I will be installing the VFD and IR at a later stage. Once they are installed, I will then be ready to install MythTV.
