Home Theatre PCWhat I was expecting to be the hardest part of the whole installation process, turned out to be the easiest. Installing and setting up MythTV.

The first step is to install the backend. This was accomplished by running the command: sudo apt-get install mythtv-backend-master. This will install the backend and setup the MySQL databases. It will also provide a password which you will need later.

Once the backend is installed, the front-end can be installed by running the command: sudo apt-get install ubuntu-mythtv-frontend. This will set up the Linux Windows Manager, automatic login into MythTV and so on, so that when you start the machine, it will go straight into MythTV.

The first time you reboot, it will automatically start the MythTV backend setup. Subsequent restarts will not start the setup, even if you had not completely set it up. The setup can be re-started by running the command: mythtv-setup. You will need to exist from the MythTV user and log in using one of the other accounts.

The setup is straightforward... just follow the screens and everything will be done for you. At this point, I had not set up a EPG source, so I went with EIT as the guide source. Most other things were left at their default values.

On the capture cards screen, each Tuner needs to be added separately. Click on New Capture Card, and choose the type as DVB DTV capture card (v3.x). This will automatically fill the frontend id with Zarlink ZL10353 DVB-T Subtype: DVB-T. Give the two cards whatever number you want.

Next is the configuration of the video source. This is a required step, even if you don't have any video sources. I just set up one called EIT. This needed changing later when I had shephard installed and ready to go.

Next is to map the video sources to the capture cards. Just map both to the same video source.

Finally, use the Channel Scanner to detect all the channels. Initially, I could get a signal for all channels, except Channel 10. However, re-running the channel selector with timeout disabled and re-running it manages to detect Channel 10.

With all the channels selected, MythTV is configured and ready to use.
